StudentCam 2026 - Documentary Competition

About this opportunity

StudentCam is C-SPAN's annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think critically about issues affecting communities and the nation. For the 2026 competition, students in grades 6-12 were asked to create a short documentary (5:00-6:00 minutes) on a historical or contemporary topic relating to America's 250th Anniversary theme, either exploring its influence on a key historic moment or how the Declaration of Independence values address contemporary issues impacting the student's community. Students compete individually or in teams of 2-3. Nearly 4,000 students participated in 2026, with 150 cash prizes totaling $100,000 awarded.

What you'll do

• Research and examine founding principles and their impact on American history and current events
• Create an original 5-6 minute documentary video exploring a historical or contemporary topic
• Include C-SPAN video clips that provide context and multiple viewpoints on your chosen topic
• Interview topical experts and explore viewpoints that may oppose your own perspective
• Cite sources appropriately using end credits or works cited list format

Requirements

Open to all students in grades 6-12. Middle School division (grades 6-8) and High School division (grades 9-12) compete separately. Students may compete individually or in teams of 2-3 members. Prize money is split evenly among team members if applicable.
