Marine Systems Diploma Program

About this opportunity

The 9-month Marine Systems Diploma program offers a compact and comprehensive curriculum designed to get students into the workforce quickly. The program uses competency-based training where students demonstrate work while understanding the theory behind it. Hands-on training follows CFR, ABYC, NFPA, ABS, and NMEA industry standards, conducted on real boats of various construction types (wood, fiberglass, aluminum, steel). Students follow a full-time Monday–Friday schedule (8:00 AM–5:00 PM) with no prerequisites beyond a high school diploma or GED. Fall Quarter covers Marine Systems Part I with emphasis on marine electrical systems and safety. Winter Quarter covers Part II including marine plumbing, propane, hydraulics, engines, and propulsion. Spring Quarter covers Part III with advanced electrical systems, heating, refrigeration, corrosion, and business operations. Graduates receive a diploma and are prepared for entry-level employment in boat shops, shipyards, vessel manufacturing, and educational institutions. The program is ACCSC-accredited, licensed by Washington State, and approved for Federal Student Aid including Direct Student Loans and Pell Grants.

What you'll do

• Study and practice marine electrical systems, nomenclature, hand tool use, and shop safety
• Learn marine plumbing, propane systems, hydraulics, outboard and diesel engines, steering and controls
• Master advanced electrical systems including inverters, isolation transformers, and solar technologies
• Study marine heating, refrigeration, corrosion prevention, and business operations
• Complete hands-on training on real boats of various construction types

Requirements

Must have earned high school diploma or GED prior to first day of class. Must have physical and health capacity for daily work (see Physical Requirements). Must be able to understand written and oral instruction in English. No prior boatbuilding, marine systems, or woodworking experience required.
