City Light Apprenticeships

About this opportunity

City Light apprenticeships are paid positions designed to help those interested in skilled trades get the experience they need for a career in the electrical utility industry. Apprentices receive hands-on, on-the-job training along with classroom-style learning, earning at least $46.36/hour to start with full medical, dental, and vision benefits. The program includes on-the-job training with journey-level workers and rotating crew assignments, plus evening academic classes (minimum 144 hours per year). After completing required training and classroom instruction, apprentices take City and Union required exams to become journey-level employees. Multiple apprenticeship types are offered: Pre-Apprentice Lineworker (6-month paid training), Lineworker Apprenticeship (3.5 years), Cable Splicer (4 years), Electrician Constructor (4 years), Generation Electrician Constructor (4 years), and Meter Electrician (3 years).

What you'll do

• Work as a member of an assigned crew under supervision of journey-level workers with rotating crew assignments
• Perform hands-on training with equipment specific to your trade (poles, transformers, cables, meters, etc.)
• Attend evening academic classes four hours per week (September-June) covering theory and practice of your craft
• Complete required on-the-job training hours (ranging from 6,000-8,000 hours depending on trade)
• Take City and Union required exams upon completion to earn Certificate of Completion

Requirements

Must meet City Light qualifications and requirements. Apprentices are required to join their appropriate craft's union. The Pre-Apprentice Lineworker program requires passing physical capacity tests and pole climbing tests.
